Meeting was called to order by President Marty Brown at 7:05 p.m.
Minutes from the May 20, 2010 board meeting were corrected and approved.
Ladies Team Tennis
- Heide Wolf reported that the season is over and that the team is tied for second place with Plainfield C.C. It is uncertain whether the team will move up next year.
- Heide asked if next year, an email could be sent before each home match to let members know that courts would be required. At one home meet, some members were upset because they were asked to stop playing and sweep the courts so that the ladies team could play. The dates for home matches were posted on the board, but were apparently not read. It was agreed that Heide would compose the emails and forward them to the Board Secretary to send out to the members.
- At the home meet on Wednesday, there was no toilet paper in the ladies room and the water cooler jug was empty. Heide also note that the flowers in the pots need to be watered and maintained. Chas will follow up with maintenance man.
- There had been a question earlier in the season as to whether the courts were playable after a rain and on the day of a home match. This is a difficult call and the Board agreed that each member is to use his/her best judgment. Playing on wet courts is not only dangerous, but it can severely damage the courts for the rest of the season.
Treasurer’s Report
George Jackson was unable to attend but provided a report to Marty. Expenses and cash balances are as forecasted and similar to last year’s. There were a few questions about whether some people who play regularly at Park Lakes have renewed their memberships. Meg will provide the names to George so that he can check his files.
Membership
Many members have not picked up their Membership Directory booklets. Meg will send an email reminder to the members and will mail some to Inactive members who live out of state.
House and Grounds
- We are running out of water bottles for the coolers. Nick to follow up with supplier.
- Chas will follow up with the maintenance man, Dan (a high school student), to remind him of the tasks to be completed. Chas and Nick will oversee his work and make sure things are getting done.
- Chas has personally done some bush trimming, but more needs to be done. There are several Hemlock trees that need to come down.
- Paul asked whether Nick had a chance to look into draining water from Court 5 away from the walkways. He will follow-up with Nick.
- Court posts and nets – Nick made temporary repairs to the post on Court 2; it will need to be replaced at the end of the season. Court 2 also needs a net runner which we have and will be installed. There was some question as to whether some of the nets needed to be replaced, especially Court 1. Nick to look into it.
- Chas reported that the tractor mower still has problems since it was vandalized. He will ask Nick to take a look at it.
- Video cameras – One is currently not working and is out for repair. Paul is planning to have a fifth camera installed that will show a view of all three paddle courts.
Tennis
- There was a question as to whether the club would be offering clinics this year. Rose Marie Groves to follow-up.
- A member inquired whether Park Lakes could provide a shoe washing mechanism that is offered at other clubs. Due to a tight budget and low membership dues, Park Lakes is only able to provide the shoe brushes that can be found near the viewing platform.
Advertising
- Sign on Route 46 – Jerry left yet another message with the owner of the Prudential building on Rt. 46 to discuss putting up a sign. As he has not heard back from the owner, so he will send a letter outlining what the Club proposes.
Social Committee
- The Summer Social on Sunday, June 13 was a huge success. Nearly 50 members came out and a good time was had by all. Many thanks to John Catlett for all the time and effort he put into organizing the event and serving up a delicious lunch! Thanks to Fred Erman for acting as our MC and Tournament Director, to Nick Roccaforte for “Music at the Courts” (a first!), and to Chas for helping to keep everything running smoothly. The Board also recognized Phil Geygan and was so happy to see him out and looking well.
- The next social is planned for September and will be a combination Tennis/Paddle social.
- Scrambles – In an effort to encourage more involvement in the scrambles, Glen Cassella will organize weekly scrambles for Saturday mornings at 11am. The first date will be June 26 and will include a potluck BBQ.
Miscellaneous
- Pat Kelleher sent a thank you note to the Board for the appreciation gift she received from the Club – an engraved pewter wine coaster. Many thanks to Pat for her years on the Board and for her ongoing volunteer efforts at Park Lakes.
- Mountain Lakes turns 100 in 2011 and is planning a full year of centennial celebrations. Park Lakes has been asked to participate. The Club will offer a Round-Robin sometime during the tennis season. Pat Kelleher will work together with other Park Lakes volunteers to plan the event.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Meg Richards, Board Secretary
